Researchers at Bowling Green State University independently analyzed 73,982 Utah middle and high school students from the same SHARP survey dataset used in the BYU Studies research.
Their findings confirmed that LDS LGBTQ youth had lower suicide risk than their peers in other religious groups or with no religious affiliation. The researchers identified family closeness and lower substance use as the primary explanatory factors — the same mechanisms identified in the BYU Studies analysis.
